Buyers eye inner-west for Brisbane state schools

THEY say a good education is priceless so it was no surprise to see Tarragindi flagged in a Courier-Mail article about Brisbane suburbs where homebuyers are paying top dollar to live in the catchment areas of well-regarded state high schools.

The other suburbs where Brisbane families are paying about $100,000 extra for homes are very well known to Reg Strow Real Estate – West End, Mansfield, Sunnybank Hills, Mount Gravatt, Ascot, Indooroopilly, St Lucia and East Brisbane, the Courier reported.

And when you crunch the numbers you can certainly see the wisdom of the strategy.

Take the private school Brisbane Grammar, for example, where the annual fee and technology package levy alone come to about $25,000 a student. Six years of high school adds up to  $150,000. And that’s just for one child. If you have three, you’re forking over $450,000 – which would buy a decent investment property for your retirement.

How it works is that each state school has a set area around it from which it must accept enrolments. But it’s up to the school whether it enrols a student from outside that zone. If you want to guarantee your child a spot in a highly regarded state school, you have to live in the catchment.

Luckily, we are blessed with quality state high schools in the inner-west of Brisbane, serving families in suburbs such as Tarragindi, Salisbury, Moorooka, Rocklea, Holland Park, Greenslopes, and Annerley.
